| The Wraparound Process |
| The Wraparound Process "Wraparound is an intensive, holistic method of engaging with individuals with complex needs (most typically children, youth and their families) so that they can live in their homes and communities and realize their hopes and dreams." - National Wraparound Initiative. I think you will see that what mainstream society is calling the wraparound process is nothing new to Indian country. In fact, people have been doing this for centuries. The wraparound process tries to find a balance between the natural supports and professional services in your community to implement strength based, individual plans of care to meet the needs of the children and families you are serving. Wotakuye Wicakikco (Calling on our Relatives) This is a unique training that offers the wisdom of the children, families and the professionals who implemented the wraparound process in North Dakota. Together, the tribes in North Dakota developed a project that incorporated the teachings of their people with mainstream ideas. This project came to be known as the Sacred Child Project. The Sacred Child Project was a nationally recognized demonstration project funded by the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Adminstration (SAMHSA). This training is a culmination of years of experience in utilizing the wraparound process with Native American families. Our children and families were our greatest teachers and their input was crucial to the development of this raining. Wotakuye Wicakikco is an interactive training, which means that it's success will depend on your ability to express yourself. The training begins with broad philosophies and eventually narrows down to the actual process and how you implement it into the way you work with children and families. Together, we will share and reflect on our life experiences so that we may better understand our selves, our families, and our communities. Specific Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will learn the essential elements of the Wraparound Process. 2. Participants will gain an understanding of family culture by reflecting on their own. 3. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of developing positive relationships. 4. Participants will gain helpful strategies on working with Native American families. |
